Chord Progressions and Modal Applications    


To use the table below:

  • M = MAJOR
  • Mm = MELODIC MINOR,
  • HM = HARMONIC MAJOR
  • Hm = HARMONIC MINOR
  ROMAN NUMERALS represent the MODE of the CURRENT KEY
(i.e.) I M =  1st mode of MAJOR,  IV Mm = 4th mode of MELODIC MINOR
 So, for example; in "TAKE THE 'A' TRAIN", the first chord is C and you
are playing the I M or 1st mode of C MAJOR.
The second chord is D7#11 (it is NOT a "D7b5" ~ that is a misnomer!)
and you are playing the IV Mm or 4th mode of A MELODIC MINOR ~D is the 4th of A Mm.
